What Are Capital Supports Under the NDIS?

Capital Supports provide funding for higher-cost items and investments that help manage the impact of your disability.

This generally covers one-off purchases or major investments, such as:

  • Specialised equipment or technology to help you move or communicate.
  • Changes to the structure of your home (Home Modifications).
  • Specialist housing for people with high support needs.

NDIS plans are made up of four budgets:

  • Core Supports: for everyday activities
  • Capacity Building Supports: to build skills and independence
  • Capital Supports: for higher-cost items like equipment
  • Recurring Supports: regular payments paid directly to you

Because these items are often expensive and specific, all Capital Supports are stated. This means the funding is allocated for a specific purpose (like a specific wheelchair or bathroom modification) and cannot be used for anything else.

Who might need Capital Supports

Capital Supports funding is provided for people who need specialised equipment or changes to their living environment to manage their disability.

This could include:

  • Equipment to help you move around, communicate or perform daily tasks (Assistive Technology).
  • Changes to the structure or layout of your home so you can access it safely (Home Modifications).
  • Specialised housing if you have very high support needs or extreme functional impairment (Specialist Disability Accommodation).

You might need a single item like a wheelchair, or a major modification like a bathroom renovation. Capital Supports are designed to fund these specific, higher-cost solutions.

What Capital Supports Can Help With

Capital Supports are designed to reduce the impact of your disability by providing the right equipment or environment for your needs.

They can help you:

  • Increase independence – Use technology or equipment to do things yourself that you couldn’t do otherwise.
  • Improve safety – Modify your home to prevent falls or make it easier to move around.
  • Live comfortably – Access housing designed specifically for high support needs.
  • Connect with others – Use communication devices or mobility aids to participate in your community.

The goal is to provide the physical tools and environment you need to live your life safely and with as much independence as possible

Support Categories in the Capital Supports Budget

Your Capital Supports budget includes specific support categories. What you can use depends on what’s funded in your individual plan. All Capital Supports are stated, which means the funding is allocated for a specific purpose and cannot be used for anything else.

Capital Supports include:

Assistive Technology

Equipment or items to help you with everyday tasks and reach your potential at home, in the community and the workplace. This category generally covers mid-cost and high-cost items. Note: Low-cost assistive technology (under $1,500) is usually funded under Consumables in your Core Supports budget.

Supports to repair and maintain your assistive technology. This also includes short-term rental and trial of equipment.

Supports to make changes to the structure, layout or fittings of your home so you can safely access it and move around comfortably.

Specially designed housing for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.

How These Supports Are Funded Through the NDIS

Capital Supports are funded when they are included in your individual NDIS plan, usually after an assessment by an allied health professional (like an Occupational Therapist). Because every participant’s situation is unique, you might not have Capital funding in your plan unless you have a specific need for higher-cost items like equipment, home modifications or specialist accommodation. Unlike other budgets, Capital funding is often approved for a specific item or project (like a wheelchair or bathroom renovation). If you believe you need Capital Supports but don’t have funding, you can speak to your NDIS contact or support coordinator about providing evidence for these supports.

Common Questions About Capacity Building Supports

Do I have to spend all my Capital Support funding?

No, you don’t have to spend every dollar if you don’t need to. However, NDIS funding does not roll over to your next plan. If you have unspent funds at the end of your plan period, they return to the NDIS and cannot be used later.

No. All Capital Support categories are stated, which means the funding is strictly allocated for a specific purpose (like a specific wheelchair or home modification). You cannot use funding from one category to pay for another.

Capital Supports fund mid to high-cost assistive technology (generally items over $1,500). Low-cost assistive technology (under $1,500) and everyday items are usually funded under Consumables in your Core Supports budget.

Generally, no. Capital Supports fund modifications related to your disability (like widening a doorway or installing rails), not general home repairs or maintenance that any homeowner would need to do.

No. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding covers the cost of the specialised building itself. You will still need to pay a Reasonable Rent Contribution (RSP) from your disability pension or other income to live there.

Yes, usually. Because Capital Supports are for specific, higher-cost items, the NDIS often requires a quote or assessment from an allied health professional before the funding is approved in your plan.
